It's wonderful having access to the millions of functions most modern DAWs like Logic Pro, Cubase, Pro Tools and Ableton Live provide. But, honestly, sometimes a simple, single task app might be all you need when it comes to choosing which port you receive and send MIDI signals from and to.

1. The Linux ALSA, Macintosh CoreMIDI and JACK APIs allow for the establishment of virtual input and output MIDI ports to which other software clients can connect. RtMidi incorporates this functionality with the RtMidiIn::openVirtualPort and RtMidiOut::openVirtualPort functions.
2. A Free Virtual MIDI Driver. LoopBe1 is an internal MIDI device for transferring MIDI data between computer programs. Basically LoopBe1 is an 'invisible cable' to connect a MIDI outport of an application to any other application´s MIDI inport. All MIDI data sent to the program´s output is channeled to the receiving applications in realtime.
3. Portmidi's design is based on the Windows MIDI API, which does not allow applications to create virtual ports (without installing a separate driver). On OS X, you can create a virtual port with MIDISourceCreate; on Linux, by creating a port with the (SUBS)READ/WRITE flags.

Ícaro Ferre, the brains behind Spektro Audio has released version 1.0 of MIDIrouter, which does what you'd expect. Forget complex menus and a multitude of buttons or displays. This easy to use app gives you two drop down menus. One to choose the MIDI In port and the other to choose the MIDI Out port. Done. MIDIrouter simply routes incoming MIDI signals from a selected input port to another output port.
